All of us understand the importance of caring for our body. Our culture reminds us of it
all the time. We know that diet and exercise are important. We may not actually do
anything about it, but at least we recognize that failing to care for our bodies will have
consequences. But what about caring for our soul? There’s not a lot of attention given to
“soul care” in our culture. In fact, to many, the very idea that we have a soul is confusing
at best and nonsensical at worst. Even people who go to church have a difficult time
defining what the soul actually is.

Zechariah’s name means “the Lord has remembered.” Exile, destruction, and devastation have
come to Judah, but Zechariah’s message is not about the past. He is preparing his hearers for
renewal in the future. Through a series of visions and oracles, he describes the transformation of
the Israelites who went into exile as a nation but return in character as a church. They have been
through a lot as a people, but their story is not over. They are not forgotten, and God has a future
planned for the people marked by promise and a renewal of the covenant of their ancestors (8:8).

This July we are doing a 4-week series on the Minor Prophets. The term “minor” is not an
indication of the importance of these Old Testament prophets but rather that these prophesies are
each much shorter than the prophecies of Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. The Minor Prophets are
filled with promises, assurances and warnings. Ultimately, they point prophetically to the coming
Messiah and the new covenant He provides.

Disaster has befallen the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the impact of this is not lost on the
Southern Kingdom of Judah. They desire peace and security in their own land, and yet Micah
sees clearly how they too have not walked in the ways of God. As a small town boy living
outside Jerusalem, he sees the excesses and abuses of the capitol and has harsh words for their
empty religion. What then should they do? How should they respond to the sins of their own
nation? Will more and bigger sacrifices atone for their sins? What does the Lord require of His
people?

It is a simple story. Hosea, a prophet in the Northern Kingdom of Israel, marries Gomer.
Though he is faithful to her, she is unfaithful to him. She betrays their vows and looks for ways
to provide for herself through other men. But Hosea does not give up on her. He remains
faithful and pursues her even as she runs from him. This of course is the story of Israel and God,
but it is also the story of God and us. Through the cross, God absorbed the punishment we
deserved and enabled repentance in God’s people, not be waiting for us to return, but instead by
turning to find the lost.
